Lauhkeat Lampaat are the brother-duo of Antti and Jaakko Tolvi, best known for being part of the unimitable Rauhan Orkesteri. Lauhkeat Lampaat is far more stripped down and slightly less chaotic, but just as good and just as fun. On "Mystery of Hyyry," the brothers Tolvi push minimalistic folk splurge to its extremes. These barely-there improvisations scatter like fallen leaves in the autumn. The percussive binges and purges mix nicely with various toys and tapes, making something totally new. It is the sound of children playing, without voices and without care. There is innocence in this music that cannot be denied or underscored enough. It is disjointed magic, hailing from the mystical outlands of the north. I can't explain it or define it, but this kind of thing puts a huge grin on my face. The Tolvi brothers reach a harmony completely disconnected from our own reality, surging past on a boat made of grass. Lauhkeat Lampaat are channeling the spirits of the earth, making music that is totally organic. Goddamn I love this. Comes beautifully packaged in a paper bag wrapped around a piece of straw. 9/10 --
