One of my favorite things to do when I?m listening to music alone and I know no one else can hear me (in my car, usually) is to ?sound? along to whatever I?m listening to. Regardless of genre, I like to grunt, shout, yell, bang, and sometimes even sing along. Never once, though, have I thought to make any of the sounds made by voice artist/flutist Emily Hay on this disc. On top of Modern Classical 101 with percussionist/electronics guy Marcos Fernandes, Hay flits back and forth from Jaap Blonk and Maja Ratke territory, to scat and bebop, to imitating animals and dribbling her lips like a cartoon character. It?s admirable from the standpoint of a fellow cacophonous accompanist (especially someone who catches himself doing this while walking down the street with headphones on, engendering odd glances from people rounding corners), but mostly it?s comical. The instrumental tracks are pleasant enough, and while I imagine being able to appreciate the spectacle live, I just can?t bring myself to listen to this more than necessary to write a review. 5/10 --
