The clear winner of this month?s WTF Awards. Warm synth glows and flowing bass back a lugubrious piano melody on ?While You were Dreaming? and ?When I was a Boy,? while ?Morning Sun? is a restive synth-pop piece similar in tempo and arrangement to the bigger hits of the Church, with multi-tracked low vocal harmonies even. It?s kind of admirable to recreate AOR radio circa 1988 but it?s also pretty ridiculous. Then there?s ?I Bring You Toast,? an upbeat acoustic lilt that?s auditioning for the role of opening track on "Bryter Later," and tell you what, if ya throw in some bacon too I just might give it to ya. That?s the spirit. ?(Two) Lips? is a pop-jazz piano meditation, ?Don?t Get Up? a sound collage of carnal grunts and beeping machines?see what I mean, this record is damn hard to figure out. One minute it?s Billy Joel, the next it?s Sun City Girls. Then it?s back to the saccharine with ?Midmorning Lullaby,? except the singer?s trying to do the ?nice mellow guy? Toad the Wet Sprocket thing while singing weirdo lines like ?The pounding in this tunnel growing louder, so loud you can?t sleep.? I like diversity in songcraft, really I do, but I need a better handle on what?s going on than this album gives me. 4/10 --
