Harvestman is Steve Von Till of Neurosis exploring his love of English psychedelic and progressive folk music. Though he is known for a haunted, gravely baritone (best heard on his first solo album, ?As The Crow Flies,? also on Neurot), Von Till keeps it in the box this time in favor of a gorgeous, drifting, ambient haze engulfing some very tasteful trad flavored guitar licks, which nod toward Bert Jansch (?Jack Orion?) and John Renbourn (the traditional ?Scarborough Fair?), among others. This is less a retro-visitation than a re-imagining of what psychedelic folk with noise can be. Von Till obviously has a deep affinity for the early ?70s recordings of Pink Floyd, Hawkwind and Eno, on top of the musicians mentioned above, and it all shines luminously amid these deep, swaying portals to the heart of the dark forest. Highly recommended for fans of the mellower side of Neurot and psychedelic folk in general. 8/10 --
