The second album from the Norwegian duo that is drummer Thomas Str?nen (Food) and keyboardist St?le Storl?kken (Supersilent), now calling themselves simply Humcrush, which was the title of their debut album from a couple of years back. It's a restless blend of live instruments and electronics that somehow sounds catchy and composed, even though this is live-in-the-studio improv. The press and reviews of this pair?s work ? and indeed some of the other projects they perform in ? are all over the Can and 70s big-fusion-band Miles Davis tip as well as passing other less-obvious references to outfits like Einstuerzende Neubauten and even the work of composer Karlheinz Stockhausen (the Stockhausen thing has got me, but there ya go). And there doesn?t seem to be much point fighting it either ? such references are fairly well on the money ? but I would want to add that you might throw in something a bit more contemporary ? how about Autechre?s fidgety glitchy groove-makin ? and also that if anaemic abstract Scandinavian jazz of the sort propagated by the ECM label in the 70s and 80s has a tendency to DRIVE YOU FUCKING MAD ? as it does me ? then sadly, despite the stunning proficiency of our two protagonists, and the incredibly up-to-the-minute-yet-classic-sounding listenability of their interplay, you WON?T BE ABLE TO STOMACH MORE THAN 8-10 MINUTES OF THIS RECORD AT A TIME. Either. So with a shaking hand and a sinking heart and a 3.. 4.. 5/10 --
