Don?t make me go digging through a pile of 10-yr-old Wire mags, but wasn?t they all over DJ Olive a while back? Wasn?t Olive involved with the ?Crooklyn Dub Consortium? (or whatever it is|was called) on that ?Illbient? (?) tip and down with the likes of.. uh.. Bill Laswell, and that crew? Or is that all just a product of my sickness?
Either way, none of that is important now, is it. ?Sleep? is a new CD of an oldish work (2001) which starts off pretty damn nice ? all laptop electro-drift droney and so on ? but then after about 15 min goes somewhere ? and I?m not even sure where, exactly ? but wherever it is, it leaves me well behind. And to be honest, feeling pretty glum that despite repeated attempts to get ?there?, I just aint gettin nowhere.
All the requisite components appear to be present and accounted for, but there?s no over-arching sense of composition to proceedings. This bit comes and that bit goes. Occasionally the nice-sounding stuff from the beginning raises its head but is gone just as soon. ?Sleep? is the soundtrack to the rough-cut of someone else?s film and you can?t figure out what is going on; you don?t have the script, the scenes are not all shot yet and the transitions are clumsy. Pretty disappointing, really. 4/10 --
