Information regarding this Baltimore duo is relatively scarce ? their MySpace page lists band members Alan and Wally, and mentions a host of influences ranging from The Skaters to Taj Mahal Travellers. Plus, they?ve got Caroliner Rainbow in their top 8. So you can imagine the sonic landscapes that these enigmatic lo-fi noise barons are conjuring on this, their debut CD-R for the fledgling Calligraphic Tapes label. Deep psych improvisations trapped beneath a massive pool of intense high-pitched drones. Foreign sonics manipulated to mimic the agonized cries of strange beasts. Yep, Pheonix Chimes wear their influences on their sleeves, and they wear it well. There?s only one element that keeps this CD-R from being great: an irritating 60-cycle hum that pervades the mix. It seems to appear and disappear at will, which is even more frustrating. But technical difficulties aside, these guys show a tremendous amount of promise and I?m sure they?ll continue to prove to be a welcome addition to the psych-noise underground. Trust me, we?ll be watching. 8/10 --
