The reedited and re-mastered reissue of this recording by Mike Tamburo and Ken Camden offers restrained guitar sounds wandering through rippling delay patterns and gradually building up to a mesmerizing soft haze. Dreamy and sparse, almost hesitant at first, the 20-minute track eventually turns into a delicate, shimmering drone, which fills the room with a relaxed, late-night ambience. The overall mood is one of utter calmness, with things moving about freely and seemingly erratic fragments of melodies, single notes, moments of silence and blurred drones drifting by in a constant flux. Even the heavy use of reverb works really well here, and adds impressive spaciousness to the music instead of just erasing all the details. ?Menken and Maas? doesn?t necessarily stand out from the many releases dealing with similar sensibilities, yet it is a pleasant listen ? fragile, unpretentious music with a great sense for subtle shifts in dynamics and density. The light joyfulness of the cover photography doesn?t really relate to the music, but nevertheless it?s truly loveable, like a friendly DIY-version of Cosima von Bonin?s aesthetic, maybe, although I?d seriously doubt that there is any interrelation? 7/10 --
