Flying Sutra "Levitate and Dissolve"

Flying Sutra is a two-piece from Philadelphia, consisting of Robert Cozzolino on drums and percussion and George Draguns on guitar. Bands like Lightning Bolt have proved how dense a sound you can create with only those two instruments and Flying Sutra continue such tradition of atmospheric guitar/drum duo bands, if in a different way than the above mentioned Lightning Bolt.

The sound of Flying Sutra is quite hard to describe bearing resemblances to fusion bands like The Soft Machine as well as current outfits like Parts & Labor and finally to Jimi Hendrix. With those references in my mind, it?s needless to say that ?Levitate and Dissolve? is an incredibly energetic album. Tracks like ?Swimming with the Quahogs? or the album ender ?Blood Blister? are full of swirling guitar feedback, frenetic drumming and a lot of fresh sweat in the air. Several longer pieces are connected by an equal number of shorter tunes which adds some variety. Of course there are also some less tight moments on ?Levitate and Dissolve?, but on the vast majority of the disc, you have the kind of vital energy that makes out a good rock album. 7/10 -- Stephan Bauer (19 September, 2007)
