Contrasting loud and soft drones, with variations on that theme throughout. 1/3 Octave Band could have used a bit more variation to be truly effective. ?I Will Pass By Here? is often predictable in its composition. There is drama, and then not, and really the only surprises are in where the drama shows up.
?Stray Light? and ?Magnetic Levitation? feature long drones, expanded space?like the Stargate scene in 2001. ?Time Domain? plays with that slightly, with loud, brassy sustained tones, as if in perpetual panic with a long echoing resolution. There is something strong at work here. Yet ?I will pass by here? which follows, is ?Domain? in reverse emotionally, with the tension rising in the middle and increasing though fading, as if the tension is now eternal. ?Black River Hymn? attempts a recap of themes and true resolution, its brassy droning hopeful bright, slightly awed.
There is a lot to like about ?I Will Pass By Here,? and there is plenty of proof that the band?s aim is high. 1/3 Octave Band ought to develop their ideas a bit more if they are going to reach those aims. Repetition has its place, but not when it becomes a distraction that undermines the work. 6/10 --
