The Far Cry

The Far Cry were a Boston-based band, who recorded this album in 1968. The back cover of this CD reissue compares the band to Blood Sweat & Tears and Captain Beefheart, and it's really hard to listen to the band and not be reminded of those bands. The singer screams and howls in a way that's highly reminiscent of Mr. Don Van Vliet (but obviously, not quite as good). The band's music is a brand of heavy psychedelic rock that's highly influenced by blues and free jazz. All of the songs feature a few horns squawking away, and the song "Dream?" features an extended drum solo, but the arrangements generally seem pretty straightforward and jammy. As in, no time signature tomfoolery or other prog weirdness. Those into the bluesy side of psych will probable be into songs like "Sweet Little Angel", but I'm not too crazy about the singer and I'd rather stick to the instrumentals, such as "Earthlight".

This album would make an interesting footnote to any psych fan's collection, but I'm not sure it's quite good enough for "lost classic" status, as these type of reissues always seem to claim. 6/10 -- Paul Simpson (29 April, 2008)
