Horse Palace, a one man drone/ambient project, brings to mind Boards of Canada and the gentler corners of Third Eye Foundation more than he does a distinctive sound of his own. Horse Palace never matches the forward momentum of invention of either of its (possible) inspirations; the album has a hollow identikit style in places. The ten songs begin to pile-up upon each other, their similarities squeezing ?Horse Palace? into a single-minded experience ? the air of a faux queasily nostalgic chill settling over everything. This wistfulness is amped-up by vinyl signifiers, an ubiquitous crackle running under the whole CD and the way the melodies sound as if they?re churned through warped wax. It might be trying to balance on the border of memory and forgetfulness, but the record doesn?t pay enough ear-rent to justify any long-term head space. 3/10 --
