I have it in my mind that Matomeri are one of the best live bands ever, not that I?ve ever seen them play live, nor will I probably ever. Canada is far from Tampere, Finland, and I?m not related to anyone who will provide me with an endless supply of money for travel. So ?Joys of Summer? is the only evidence I have to support my claim that Matomeri MUST be one of the best live bands ever. The three unflagging blasts of noise-psych mania that comprise the band?s debut (on the always impressive Ikuisuus label) smack the ears so tumultuously that a Matomeri live show can only be MORE riotous, more intense. The sheer energy, whether they?re blasting through space on the leadoff track or laying down sparkling rivers of drone on the devastatingly gorgeous ?Disastrous Restoration? is enough to bring even the most stoic of heads to tears. The epic closer ?Brown Line Fever,? which clocks in at over 18 minutes in length, shreds all sensibilities and encapsulates all that is great about psychedelia as a mindset, let alone a genre of music. The Matomeri trio, with only throat, guitar, synth and drums at their disposal, have issued forth a volcanic monument to all that is psych, one that is as feverish as it is beautiful. It?s well worth a listen, especially if you can?t make it to Finland to see them play live. 9/10 --
