California’s (VxPxC) or “Vast Psychedelic Cassettes” come at us with a CDR this time around, the soundtrack-to-a-campfire feeling “Baked Potatoes.” The first track, “Radio Hill, Elysian Park” is pleasant enough but ultimately forgettable, followed by “Under the Bridge, Again” which makes extensive use of not-so-subtle delay and ill-conceived keyboard riffage in a failed attempt to develop a psychedelic atmosphere. “Amarillo Helium Barons” is a nice little number of the meek acoustic variety, while “Blue Balls” has some really gorgeous bass tones that are unfortunately not well-backed-up by any other instrument on the track. This continues for a the remainder of the album – flashes of brilliance mixed with lots and lots and lots of filler. I find it hard to feel anything but indifferent to this album, due to the fact that the tracks aren’t necessarily bad, they’ve just been done better by countless other bands on countless other micropressings. I definitely believe that (VxPxC) have a great album in them somewhere, but minimal idea filtering and a heavy “we release every jam” vibe prevent me from really getting on board with this album. 4/10 --
