The Rational Academy's "Swans" is a 10 song 20 minute rumble through pop music experimentation. Lately I hate the label of pyschedelic that everyone seems to be putting on albums that are remotely outside the category of normal indie rock. Rational Academy's one sheet is definitely guilty of this, however one can not argue the rich textures of their songs shimmer with deft sonic explorations. "Swans" is characterized by a cohesiveness that while the members are pumping out 2 minute anthems they effortlessly move into each other though they leave you wanting more, more, and more. Regardless standout tracks include the acoustic "A New Berlin," the funky "Hammer" and "Satan" which is sorely just a quick glimpse of a stellar song. Where this album suffers is that it is just 20 minutes long and while stacked with 10 great songs, it makes you wonder if it would be better at 40 minutes with 10 great songs. Fans of Gomez should take listen! 6/10 --
