This isn’t the best way to describe this music, but it’s sort of like dub. It’s not dub, there’s no whacked out alien bass lines and toasters exposing the virtue of Jah. But in a way, Layton & Wood use ambient background, slow building synth waves, and then drop stuff on top of that. Tweaked bird sounds, acoustic guitar, more synths, etc. None of them for very long and in no discernable song structure.
It’s very hypnotic, but tends to go on for a while. And the ambient background, or at least a large portion of it, seems to be used repeatedly. Tension comes and goes from track to track, but it really could have used some slimming down. 5/10 -- Andrew Murdock Livingston (7 October, 2009)
