A Gun Called Tension is a promising new enterprise landing somewhere between the classic indie rock of the Pixies and Flaming Lips, new wave and early hip hop, as in the pre gangsta stuff, back when rhymin? paid more than crimin?. The first track ?Hero? delivers with vintage drum loops, squelching guitar noise and loony spoken word that sounds like a hip-hop Captain Beefheart, but I find myself more in tune with the freaky dance punk of tracks like ?Gold Fronts? and ?Treason,? both of which have enough hooks and disco grit to keep any Le Tigre fan happy. The rhymes are pretty memorable too, along with a solid production that hearkens back to vintage early 80s, 808 drum machines and brain-fried dub trips. Though not my usual cup of tea, these lads hit the bull?s-eye more than they miss. 6/10 --
