“Tocasen” is the second release from Moth Electret, the solo project of a fellow from California named Stig Berg, whom also records as R|A|A|N. The seven tracks spread across this hour-plus sound excursion are filled with all sorts of buzzing, clattering, chiming, and looping textures. Shot with a dose of not-too-dark ambient magik, there are passages here that at times recall the work of Coil. I’d venture a guess, though, that Berg is working quite heavily in digitally enhanced field recordings as evidenced by the nocturnal insect chatter on “Metro Byzantinn” and the breezy atmospherics of “Beryllium Fritillary”. While this is largely textural music, a few tracks, particularly “Parnassien”, have a more pronounced rhythmic undercurrent. The sounds on “Tocasen” are definitely texturally rich and far more active than your average ambient/drone album. One minor criticism, however, is that you can generally anticipate the course that many of these tracks will take within a few minutes. 6/10 --
