United Bible Studies are one of the man prolific bands in Ireland's sprawling Deserted Village collective. Their organic soundscapes have become somewhat of a signature of DV artists, but in my mind, nobody does it better than the group that plays as UBS. This split with Tremors is no exception. With wailing saxophone provided by Se?n ?g leading the way, this disc opens with a raucous and inspiring piece. Subtle chord shifts in the screeching bowed guitars underneath, and minimal feedback give this piece layer upon layer of texture. Add in some tribal percussion, and you're in for a damn good time. As this piece builds in intensity, you can feel the energy being harnessed and released. This is improvisation at its best, and goddamn are UBS great. Their second track on this split is more sparse and reminds me a lot of Davenport's explorations. It's like the sound of old bones creaking and cracking, or a staircase with a squeaky board. This is simply great. Tremors are a new name to me, but their sonic wall of feedback does not disappoint. At just over 22 minutes in length, this industrial drone will melt your mind like steel. This is a perfect example of using music as a hypnotic medium. Midway through this track, entitled "Arise Bongchild," you will find yourself staring off into space as the music seeps into your every pore. I definitely want to hear more of this band. This split gives you 40 minutes of music by two very different bands, and every minute of it is worth hearing. 8/10 --
