I love me some Four Tet. Kieren Hebden's project has shot to the top of my list of artists whose new releases I most look forward to. Hella is a band I've heard a lot about but never really heard. So bonus points for this 7" from me for combining an artist I love and an artist I'm curious about. The Four Tet track, "Both When I Am Alone and We Both Are," is a stunner. I just saw the last Matrix movie and the amazing work Hebden does processing and piecing together drum loops on this song is like something as futuristic and mechanical that was created in that movie. But that's not the most brilliant part. While this chaos goes on the background, there is a phoenix rising from the ashes. Glittery synthesizers ascend overhead whimsically. Only someone with Hebden's talent could make this work and make it work he does. Hella did not disappoint, either, and if the rest of their material is anything like "Stephen Hawking Has a Posse" (bonus points for the title alone), then they've got a new fan. Big, booming, drums are loaded with reverb and shot out of a canon. Muted, distorted bass and feedback attack with melodius precision. It's a total clusterfuck and I love it. This is the new punk rock. Sign me the fuck up. 8/10 --
